The royal contestant was unmasked as 1990s singer Jewel, beating singer and YouTuber Todrick Hall, who lasted the whole series dressed as Bull.
Although she reigned supreme over the other contestants, she didn’t fool the celebrity panel—who almost unanimously guessed it was Jewel hiding beneath the giant heart-shaped mask.
Jewel’s Journey on ‘The Masked Singer’
Jewel lasted almost the entire competition on The Masked Singer, starting in Week 2 as a member of Group B. While wildcard entries came and went, she made it through five weeks of performances.
She survived the first round by singing “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, following that in Week 4 with “La vie en rose” by Edith Piaf. In Week 6 she sang “River” by Bishop Briggs. Two weeks later, she performed “She’s Got You” by Patsy Cline. In Week 10, she gave a rendition of “Bird Set Free” by Sia to beat Banana Split and reach the finale—where she would face the Bull, who won Group A.
During the finale on December 15, Jewel sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra, “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye and “Firework” by Katy Perry.
By the final show, three of the four judges had figured out it was Jewel underneath the mask. Ken Jeong thought it was Renée Zellweger, but Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger all correctly guessed the identity of Queen of Hearts. The guesses were a big change from their first impressions, which included Carrie Underwood, Fergie and Idina Menzel.
Scherzinger also correctly guessed that the Bull was YouTube personality Hall.
Jewel dropped subtle clues throughout. In Week 8 her trophy clue was a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. She won that accolade in 1998 and 1999.
Jewel’s Career
Jewel, full name Jewel Kilcher, is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer who burst onto the music scene in the 1990s.
She grew up singing and yodeling with her father in Homer, Alaska, before finding success in her early twenties. The single “Who Will Save Your Soul” was followed by hits “You Were Meant For Me” and “Foolish Games,” all from her debut album Pieces of You.
She toured with Bob Dylan in 1997, which helped her gain widespread public exposure. Although her music hasn’t charted as well since the 1990s, she has continued to perform and tour. Jewel has also acted in several movies and TV shows, sometimes playing herself.
The Masked Singer wasn’t Jewel’s first experience with a competition show. She had been due to compete in Season 8 of Dancing with the Stars in 2009, but broke her legs prior to the show. She appeared as a special musical guest instead.
