The 33-year-old linebacker put together a strong performance for the Toronto Argonauts, helping the team to a comeback win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the 2022 Grey Cup. He was honored after the game with the 2022 Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian award, also known as the Dick Suderman Trophy.
In addition, Muamba was also named the 2022 Grey Cup MVP. He becomes only the second player ever to win both awards in the same title game, joining his teammate Andrew harris, who earned the two awards in 2019 when he was with the Blue Bombers.
The St. Francis Xavier product had a clutch interception in the fourth quarter, picking off Blue Bombers’ QB Zach Collaros right after Toronto had taken a one-point lead. It allowed the Argos to kill time off the clock, eventually leading to the win.
Muamba added three tackles as well in his first-ever CFL championship victory.
Here is a look at the history of the Dick Suderman trophy and the previous winners of the Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian.
Previous Grey Cup Canadian MVP winners
The award has been around for over 50 years, as the CFL first introduced the trophy in 1971. Dick Suderman was the first player to win the award. A year later, Suderman died from a brain hemorrhage, and the trophy was named after him in his honor.
Don Sweet and Dave Sapunjis currently are tied for the record of most Dick Suderman Trophies. Each has won the award three times. Sapunjis is the only player to win the honor in back-to-back Grey Cups.
Andrew Harris was the only player that had won both the Dick Suderman Trophy and CFL MVP in the same Grey Cup, doing so in 2019. He now has company, as Muamba joins him in the unique category.
